Description
Vintage Hermes Arceau ladies' quartz wristwatch with a round case and white dial signed "HERMES PARIS" and "SWISS MADE" with script Arabic numerals. The caseback is engraved with the Hermes "H Quartz" logo, "WATER RESISTANT," and the Hermes horse-and-carriage motif; the two-tone bracelet features pierced "H"-shaped links and a folding clasp engraved "HERMES." Case measures roughly 24-26mm excluding crown; the crown is signed. Condition shows significant wear: heavily worn and flaking gold-tone plating on the caseback (large areas of loss), tarnish and green verdigris on several bracelet links, and scratches to the case and bracelet. Running/working condition has been tested (needs battery/service). Notes from the Curator Henri d'Origny introduced the Arceau in 1978, the same year Hermès founded La Montre Hermès in Biel, Switzerland, and this compact quartz ladies' model with its two-tone H-link bracelet represents a variant produced from the 1990s into the early 2000s. The round case features asymmetrical stirrup-shaped attachments, a direct echo of the maison's origins as a harness-maker, and the angled Arabic numerals on the white dial are unmistakably Hermès. The H-link bracelet, with its pierced initial motif repeated along each segment, was designed as an integrated alternative to the Arceau's more common leather strap, allowing the watch to move seamlessly from the Faubourg Saint-Honoré to the countryside. Pieces of this era typically carried a case diameter of around 24–26 mm, the scale considered proper for women's wristwatches in the decades immediately following the Arceau's launch, and the two-tone finish—stainless steel paired with 18-karat gold plating—answered a demand for versatility without the weight of solid gold.
