Description
Vintage Hermes Paris ladies' quartz wristwatch with a small round gold-plated case (approximately 24-26mm). The blue/gunmetal gradient dial is signed "HERMES PARIS" with the Duc carriage-and-horse logo above "QUARTZ" and "SWISS," with slim gold-tone baton hands and no numerals. The two-tone bezel combines polished gold-tone tabs with a darker gunmetal ring. The snap-off caseback is engraved with the Hermes carriage crest, the encircled "H QUARTZ" mark, and "WATER RESISTANT," and shows a base-metal tone with scratching consistent with a plated (not solid gold) case. Fitted on a green crocodile-embossed leather strap with a plain steel buckle (an aftermarket, non-Hermes replacement band). In working condition. Notes from the Curator This vintage quartz timepiece belongs to the period when Hermès crafted pocket watches and wristwatches sporadically until launching serious collections in the 1970s, and vintage Hermès watches feature gold plated cases, stainless steel construction, and precious metal options, with white dial configurations dominating dress models while the quartz movement revolution of the 1980s influenced many Hermès timepieces. All of the brand's watches with a quartz movement feature a closed caseback with Hermès' stamped ex-libris motif—the Duc carriage crest visible here. That emblem didn't appear until 1950, drawing direct inspiration from a 19th-century painting by French artist Alfred de Dreux, titled "Le Duc Attelé, Groom à L'Attente," which depicts an elegant horse-drawn carriage waiting for its aristocratic passengers—an image that perfectly captures the maison's beginnings in 1837 as a harness workshop for European nobility. The two-tone bezel architecture, pairing polished gold tabs with a darker recessed ring, reflects the design approach of the 1980s and early 1990s, when Swiss quartz allowed Hermès to translate its leather-goods sensibility into accessible, elegant timepieces that could accompany daily life as gracefully as the house's bags and scarves.
