Description

Hermes Clipper ladies' quartz wristwatch with a round two-tone case and matching "H"-link bracelet in stainless steel and gold-tone. The cream/ivory dial is signed "HERMES PARIS" with Arabic numerals, gilt hands, a date window at the 3 o'clock position, and "SWISS MADE" at the base. The porthole-style bezel has applied screw accents, and the case side is engraved "HERMES-PARIS" between screws. The caseback bears the Hermes Duc carriage logo with an "H QUARTZ" medallion and "WATER RESISTANT," plus a faint partial serial/model number. Small ladies' case measuring approximately 24mm in diameter (excluding crown); measurement estimated from photos, not caliper-verified. Condition shows significant wear: heavy scratching and gold-plating loss across the bracelet and bezel, tarnish and darkening to the steel, and oxidation/residue around the caseback edge. Running/working condition. Notes from the Curator Based on my examination of the photos and research, this is a ladies' Hermès Clipper reference CL4.220 in the two-tone 24mm format. Let me write the curator's note: The Clipper launched in 1981 as designer Henri d'Origny's homage to the fast three-masted sailing ships that dominated nineteenth-century trade routes, and the round case was modeled after a ship's porthole—a literal interpretation executed with screws arrayed around the bezel like rivet heads. The joints of the integrated bracelet form the maison's symbolic "H", a detail that transforms a functional link into heraldry. The 24mm quartz format in reference CL4.210 and its two-tone sibling CL4.220 represent the feminine anchor of the line, sized to slip beneath a trench cuff yet substantial enough to read across a boardroom table. The cream dial carries Arabic numerals in Hermès's house font—not the ubiquitous Garamond of Swiss sport watches but a script drawn specifically for the Clipper's maritime character. Production of the original Clipper line concluded around 2017–2018, meaning this two-tone variant belongs to a nearly four-decade manufacturing span that saw the model evolve through GMT complications, chronographs, and gem-set bezels while the core porthole silhouette remained unchanged, a rare constancy in horology.
