The pear or pendeloque shape, credited to Flemish polisher Lodewyk van Berquem working around 1475, is one of the oldest fancy cuts still executed today, and the teardrop silhouette has long moved between pendant and ring settings in jewellery history. The pendant's construction pairs platinum—which became the wedding-ring metal of choice during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras for its durability and bright finish—with 18-karat gold, which contains 75 percent pure gold alloyed for strength.
