The form arose in jewellery workshops of the Edwardian era, when platinum's high melting point—first tamed in the 1880s—permitted open-work settings too delicate for gold; by the 1920s the vertical drop had become an Art Deco signature. Three-stone compositions carry the old symbolic trinity of past, present, and future, though jewellers prized them as much for the optical trick: the graduated scale creates an illusion of continuous movement and adds perceived length to the neckline. Platinum 950, the standard fineness adopted after Britain's Hallmarking Act of 1973, marries ninety-five per cent pure platinum with ruthenium or cobalt alloys that lend the metal tensile strength without dimming its cool lustre.
